When a student enrolls at the Montessori School for Young Children his or her entire family becomes part of our community. Our school hosts several all-school events throughout the year including an ice cream social, an end-of-year picnic/graduation, and an adult-only fundraising event. We also offer Parent Education Events that address topics such as lessons in the Montessori classrooms, the Montessori School for Young Children Spanish program, discipline, and kindergarten options. We provide many opportunities for families to interact and develop life-long friendships.
The Montessori School for Young Children also tries to make a difference in the Lincoln community. We have been supporters of the Lincoln Children’s Zoo “Boo at the Zoo” event and support other non-profits’ fundraising efforts such as making our bird seed purchases through the Wachiska Audubon Society. Each year our students collect items to benefit a non-profit organization. During the 2015-2016 school year, our students collected coats for CEDARS Home for Children and winter accessories for The Bay’s clothing distribution program.
As a non-profit organization, the Montessori School for Young Children relies on the support of our parent (or grandparent!) volunteers. Our families have dedicated tens of thousands of volunteer hours to our community during the 45 years that MSYC has been educating young children. We ask that each family be aware and ready when we reach out about various volunteer opportunities. Our staff and Board of Directors understand and appreciate the busy lives that families with young children have and never want volunteering to be a hardship for any family. We provide countless opportunities for families to make a difference at our school.
Volunteer opportunities are available during school hours, during the evenings, and even the weekends. We occasionally have take-home opportunities that volunteers can complete at home when they have a few minutes to spare. Volunteering can include helping children check out library books at the school’s library or helping with small repairs and updates around the school property. Other volunteers write articles for our school newsletter or join us on our fall and spring work days to help spread mulch, rake leaves, and help in our gardens. Even our young students recognize the importance of families working together to make MSYC the wonderful community that it has become and continues to be.
Each school year we host a variety of community events such as family our Fall Family Fun Day at Bloom Where You’re Planted Farm!
